About Derrick Hemphill

Derrick Hemphill is an arts and culture writer, curator, and consultant. His articles have appeared at NBCNews.com, Uptown Magazine, Edition by Modern Luxury, and DailyCommune.com, covering art, travel, music, theatre, and social justice. He has interviewed notable figures like Misty Copeland, Fantasia, Wendell Pierce, Gregory Porter, and Nas and has covered Broadway shows, concerts, and premieres.  

Derrick advises artists and organizations on projects centered around archival printing. A native of New Orleans, he previously founded ArtSpace Prints, a venture that produced museum-quality giclée prints and restored works by artists like Charles Collins, Jr. He also launched DailyCommune Publishing, which has since evolved into derrickhemphill.com.

A curator of exhibitions like Mardi Gras in the Age of Ubiquity and BREAKING GROUND: WORKS BY THE ARTSPACE COMMUNITY, Derrick draws inspiration from his favorite artists such as Kehinde Wiley, LaToya Hobbs, Kara Walker, Barkley Hendricks, Elizabeth Catlett, and Kerry James Marshall.  

Now based in Harlem, New York City, Derrick’s travels to St. Maarten, Paris, Thailand, Myanmar, Amsterdam, Philadelphia, Greece, Spain, and London have shaped his worldview. These experiences inform his work and his commitment to exploring the intersections of art, culture, and social justice.  

Currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Museum Studies at Southern University at New Orleans, Derrick aims to create exhibitions that explore race, class, and equity.
